WTC Tragedy - September 11, 2001

There have been quite a few quilting tributes to the many lives lost due to the terrorist attacks on the US.  I have taken part in 2:

I made 2 of these for the official WTC Memorial Quilt - one for the main quilt, one for the charity quilt.

United in Memory plans to collect one 18" block for each life lost.  They ask people to choose a victim and make a block to represent them.  I chose Greg Buck, a fire fighter who entered the WTC just 10 minutes before the building collapsed.  He was 37, newly married and had a dog named Emily.
Greg was a fully qualified nurse, a talented cook and also a gifted carpenter who loved making furniture with his dad.
He was also a classically trained pianist, so it was music that I chose to represent in his block.  I raided my precious music stash, surrounding his photo with blue notes.  A cross like the health care cross is formed around his photo by the red roses.

Here you can see this block in its completed panel:

My second United in Memory block was made to honour the life of Lynn Goodchild.  She was 25, and about to begin studying for her MBA.  She and her boyfriend Shawn were on United Airlines flight 175, which hit one of the Twin Towers.  They were on their way to Hawaii for a holiday.  They lived in Sydney for a year.  Lynn was heavily involved with Karate, and was president of the Karate Club at Bryant College.  I chose some of my Japanese dragonfly fabric to represent this part of her life.

I have been corresponding with Lynn's mom in the US, who found my page via a search engine.  She and her family have become involved in the UIM project, tying some panels and viewing the exhibition.  She will be visiting Sydney in 2004 and my husband and I will try to meet her.

Here you can see Lynn's block in the completed panel:

My mother's block that she made for Vincent D'Amadeo is the top block of the column Lynn's block is in.
