Oriental Hexagons

Dimensions: approx 45" x 65" (I'll have to measure it properly!)

Completed: October 2006

This was my latest hand piecing project. My best friend Diana (some of you may remember her from my first applique attempt - the dragon wallhanging) is [finally!] getting married.
I wanted to make her a quilt but didn't know how to offer..... asked her what she wanted, she asked for a quilt :-D
Further details were a bit tricky. Nothing "too girly".... a Baltimore style wasn't "manly" enough, double wedding ring (in my WIP folder) rejected, everything that I wanted to do pretty much
wasn't "right", it was all too fussy. So she left it in my hands and requested something with oriental prints.
Please don't think she was being a fusspot, she wanted something to throw over the couch, not heirloom quality (which I was trying to push!!).

The result (which she has not seen): Hand pieced hexagons, because I couldn't face all those inset seams on a machine - was very quick to put together.
Plan A was to use one of each print I own. Plan B came into effect when I realised I had a lot more than I needed and could be choosy about what to include!
Hence the colourwash effect. All manly and dark and dreary down one end, light and pretty at the other.
This makes him sound like he's a pro wrestler or something!! (He's not, he's a cuddly boy who taught her how to fold laundry "properly"!).

It's machine quilted in a smoky monofilament thread, continuous curves which came up a treat.

Then there's the binding...... I didn't want 4 straight edges, so filled with half hexagons on the sides (very happy with that decision!!!), but left the hexagon "points".....
22 mitred corners  and 16 inward corners later I'm just happy the bleeding thing is finished!!
I will never again complain about regular boring bindings *grin*.

A closeup.... you can't really see the quilting, but oh well!

And an overexposed shot of the label:

Here's a picture of the happy couple (stolen from their website) - I'll replace it with a wedding photo after the deed is done.
I get to be a bridesmaid (yay!) and may consider showing me too - will probably be the last time in my life I wear a dress!!
(Unless whoever chooses my funeral clothes feels they need to get revenge on me *grin* - but then I'll just come back and haunt them!)
