(Ben's) Kindergarden Class Quilt

Dimensions: 60" x 75"

Completed: September 2007

This is a project that began as an activity at Ben's kindergarden (my eldest boy). Each kid drew onto (not quite!) squares with fabric crayons, then once they were done I happened to walk into the room and volunteer to sew them together! (Good or bad timing? I'm not sure....)

I went for a skewed setting to disguise the different sizes and shapes of the blocks. I think it works. Using crayons on black is not a good idea, because as soon as heat gets near it, the colour is absorbed into the fabric and is very hard to see. I avoided this as much as possible - LOTS of very careful pressing of seams...
It's backed with polar fleece (thanks to all who suggested it - what a great idea that I should have thought of myself!!) and meander quilted in the sashings only.

Here it is again, this time with my gorgeous 4 1/2 year old apple-munching, jammie-clad helper.

How cute are these blocks? The first 2 are by my Ben (the first one is a picture of him and his little brother, the second is of me in my garden),
the middle one is by his friend Tiana who drew her family (a popular theme), the other 2 blocks are just a couple of the many that really touched me :-)
