This top was hastily put together
in November 2007 when I noticed little Cam and Ben fighting over
Ben's ABC
quilt.
Aiming for Christmas completion, I had the top done in a few weeks, but
hurt my back doing it. Even the thought of basting made me think it would be
cheaper to just buy my physio a beach house, so the project stalled.
A week before Cam was scheduled to turn 3 I decided it would be nice to finish it and give it to him. Hubby helped me to baste, then the next day I decided it would be more fun to get my hair dyed and then enjoy a migraine rather than spend time quilting. The next day, I got 2/3 of it done (boring meandering, nothing creative at all) before my back seized up (not really relevant as I was going to keep going no matter what.... and then my sewing machine died! Aaaargh!
I booked in time with my mother's sewing machine to finish it in a 5-hour stint (with dinner) the following Wednesday, a mere 3 days before The Deadline. (This is not how I prefer to work!). I also had to take up my dad's new pants for him while the sewing machine was out on the table....
The border colour around each block
starts with that letter - so Aqua, Blue, Chartuese, Denim, Emerald etc etc the
same way Ben's did, but I used different colours where I could. Some are a
little creative (Queenly and eXtra special fabrics LOL!!), but for Z I had to
resort to Latvian - Zils for Ben, Zaļš for Cam (go look them up if you want - it
can be the new thing you learn today!). Latvian is a cool language and comes in
handy once in a while (but not that often...).

It's based on the same layout that
I used for Ben's quilt way back when, but it has the borders I designed but never
made the first time (I got sick of the project!!). I did, however, totally stuff
up the measurements and the long blocks all ended up 1/2" too short - so there
was some serious fudging of seams. I was amazed when we managed to get it flat
enough to baste!
Ben's has interactive tactile
things all over it, whereas Cameron's has photos of family members (plus a
zipper which reveals his name - the same as on Ben's).
